Cultural Experience is a General English course with a difference. We decided to create the perfect short course for students and so we asked you what you wanted and your answers were:
- We don't want to use a course book.
- We don't want to do the same grammar lessons we have done at home.
- We want the chance to have lots and lots of speaking practice.
- We want to learn as much new vocabulary as possible.
- WE WANT SOMETHING WE WILL NEVER FORGET.
So, we designed a course with no books and no classrooms. All the lessons take place in London's museums and galleries and are active and memorable. In 2006 the course won the British Council's first prize for innovation in English language teaching.
Articles have appeared in The Guardian and Times Educational Supplement and on the Government's official i-uk site about this course.
Why is this course different?
All over the world, students are studying English in the same way, using the same text books. As you are coming to London, we want to give you something different so that you can have the opportunity to practise English as much as possible and get the most out of your time in this wonderful city.
What is Cultural Experience?
It is an intensive course with no traditional textbooks, where London is the classroom and learning is an interesting, active and memorable experience. You study English in small groups with experienced teachers in the most interesting places in London. This means you will make progress with your English and make the most of your time in London.

What will I learn on this course?
This is a General English course where you will improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as increase your vocabulary and practise grammar. The difference between Cultural Experience and other courses is not what you learn but how you learn. Each week of the course has a syllabus that is designed with clear linguistic aims to help you make progress with your English.
What is special about this course?
Cultural Experience is a unique course because it is designed to help you improve your English by making every day a memorable learning experience. The idea is simple: you will spend most of the day learning English in specific places of interest in London, such as museums and galleries and on tours and trips.
What is meant by "A Memorable Learning Experience"?
Students always tell us that they need good examples to help them learn the language - something that will stay in the memory for a long time. We have designed a course for you where every exercise is interesting and where you will be motivated all the time, so learning will become easier and more memorable.
Why are there no textbooks?
Text books are used to bring language into the classroom - this is very important when you are studying in a country where the first language is not English. But we want you to use the language that is outside the classroom. For this reason we have developed our own special teaching materials to create a memorable learning experience and will be using London’s cultural heritage as our classroom.
Are there different levels?
Yes. We will test you on your first day to see which is the best group for you to be in. If it is possible, we will always encourage you to try a higher level during the course.
What is London’s cultural heritage and where will the lessons take place?
Cultural heritage includes history, literature, design, arts, science, music, sport, fashion, cinema and architecture. Your classroom will be places like the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Britain, St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Greenwich Royal Observatory, the Royal Parks, Kenwood House, Hampton Court and Dickens Museum. Activities will include: guided walking tours, River Thames trips, films, book discussions and a treasure hunt. We will use this heritage as the source for our teaching materials bringing language learning to life.
What is a typical day on this course?
Every day is different - the only typical thing is that you will learn and practise English. One day you may be preparing a spoken presentation, on another you may be writing a report. You course will also include listening practise with tours and films and a lot of reading and vocabulary. You will also have homework and be expected to work hard during the course. On average you will spend five hours a day studying and learning English.
When can I take this course?
You can take it a one or two week course in July or August or if you check COURSE INFORMATION you will see that you can also do the course for one week every month.
How long is the course?
You can take Cultural Experience for a minimum of one week and a maximum of two weeks.
Can I combine Cultural Experience with a General English or exam course?
Yes. It is a very good idea to combine it with any of these courses at Language in London: General English / IELTS / Cambridge exam preparation. We have been offering these courses for over 15 years and have had thousands of happy students. Why not be very adventurous and combine Cultural Experience with British Books and Films?
